1 Mar 1898 The place called Mealey was a town
near the foot of Moss Butte about seven miles southeast of Foster.
From Oregon Geographic Names: "...It was named in compliment to Charles Mealey and his wife Mary Jane, nee Settlemier, who came to Oregon in separate wagon trains in 1852. After marriage, the Mealeys lived in Brownsville and also in Albany, before homesteading near the South Santiam River in 1874. This homestead was near S 4, T14-S, R 2E. Mealey post office was established Aug. 19, 1892, with Orange J. Mealey first and only postmaster. The office was discontinued Mar. 1, 1898, with papers to Foster. Information about the Mealey family was sent the compiler in Sept. 1946, by William R. Mealey of Foster, son of Mr. And Mrs. Charles Mealey and brother of Orange J. Mealey. William Mealey was born in Albany in Sept. 1870, and was brought up on the Mealey place described above." Location:

10 Oct 1887 Early settlement, north east of
Scio. From Oregon Geographic Names: "Mount Pleasant is a descriptive name for a nice viewpoint mostly in S 30, T 9S, R1E. This hill rises about 200 feet above the surrounding land but it pleased the early settlers to call it a mount. The compiler does not know who was responsible for this but probably members of the Irvine family who took up property there in the early fifties. The locality was once known as the Irvine District and it was called The Hill. There is a cemetery on the top of Mount Pleasant and there are also nearby school grounds probably set aside by Robert Irvine. The church property was set aside by Washington Crabtree and it it is reported that Ben Irvine raised the money for the various necessary buildings. A post office called Mount Pleasant was established in Aug. 1874, with Elijah Richardson first of several postmasters. This office was discontinued Oct. 10, 1887. Mount Pleasant is about seven miles northeast of Scio." Location:

1 Sept 1874 Short-lived post office about six
miles southeast of Albany and near
Tallman. From Oregon Geographic Names: "The compiler has not been able to get the significance of the name Newbern, which is spelled Newburn on the map mentioned above. Benjamin N. Hardman was postmaster at the place. Newbern sounds like a family name and it may have been represented by the postmaster's middle initial, though this is no more than a surmise." Location:

30 Oct 1857 Post office in southwest Linn
County, near Linn-Lane border. From Oregon Geographic Names: "Palos post office was established Mar. 4, 1856 and was closed Oct. 30, 1857. Samuel G. Thompson was the first postmaster. The compiler does not know why this pioneer post office was named with the Spanish word meaning sticks or stones and sometimes timbers, but he has come to the conclusion that Thompson was a student of history and was familiar with the name of the port near the southwest corner of Spain from which Columbus sailed on Friday, Aug. 3, 1492, on his eventful first voyage of discovery. The Spanish place-name Palos was doubtless the origin of the name of the Linn County post office." Location:
