30 Nov 1904 A stage-stop on the old Santiam
Highway, east of Cascadia. From Oregon Geographic Names:
... [First postmaster Charles H.] Foster was the prime mover in getting
the post route established as far as his home.
He was given the privilege of naming his office, which he did with the
family name of his mother-in-law, a Mrs. Garrison."
Mullen, in Land of Linn, adds:
"...Garrison is presently known to many people as "Mountain
House," the last stopping place before "crossing the hill."
Originally Mountain House was established four miles east of Garrison at
present Sheep Creek by Andrew Wiley and owned by the Willamette Valley and
Cascade Wagon Road Company as a supply center.
In later years Mountain House was moved westward and the name of Garrison
forgotten."

On the North Santiam River,
located in both Linn and Marion counties. From Land of Linn: "The old town of Gates was in Linn county, the new town is now in Marion County. The post office, established in 1882 and operated by Mrs. Jane Henness, was located on the south side of the river where a town was expected to grow. The name of the post office became Henness. In 1883 the name was changed to Rock Creek. By 1888 quite a settlement of the Gates family had sprung up on Marion County side of the river and in 1892 the post office again was moved, this time to become known as the Gates post office in the community of Gatesville. Actually, the railroad changed the town from Linn County when rails were laid along the north side of the river in 1891." Location:
