Located on parts of two D.L.C.'s -- William Shephard and John McNeil. Established by William Shephard as a family burying ground in 1853. The first burial was that of an infant son of the Shephards who died March 25, 1853. Pioneer names in this cemetery include Bramwell, Shephard, Starr, Glass, Brattain, Geary, Bond, Bamford, Ramsay, Koontz, Bear, Penland, Kirk, Washburn. Pine Grove Cemetery Association was incorporated in 1892. Pine Grove Chapel, which was never dedicated to any denomination but was free to all as a community church, held services here until 1933.

An article appeared in the Albany Democrat-Herald, May 29, 1963:

"The peaceful tree-bordered enclosure of Pine Grove cemetery west of Halsey is distinguished for the graves of several old soldiers. It is one of many pioneer cemeteries in Linn county that have historical value. At least one of the old soldiers fought in the Indian Wars, and probably most of them.

"Benjamine F. Brattain, private in Company D of the 2nd Oregon Mounted Volunteers, born in1839, was apparently one of the pioneers of Linn county who answered the call for help from settlers in southern and eastern Oregon where Indian wars were fiercest.

"Morris Merrick of Company I of the 62nd Illinois Infantry, born in1814, and Benjamin Zeigler of Company 9 of the 12th Illinois Infantry, no dates given, undoubtedly fought in the Indian wars.

"George Williams of Company C of the 2nd Oregon Infantry, no dates given, was a Spanish-American War veteran, according to a special iron marker beside his gravestone. He served in Cuba the Philippines....

"Possibly the oldest person buried here from the standpoint of birth date was an Englishman, Thomas Keys, born in Parish Hadstock in Buckinghamshire in 1791. Nearly as old was Rebecca Gilworth, who died in1894 at the age of 99 1/2 years, and who must have come west at an older age than most. The legend on her gravestone reads, "In heaven we hope to meet thee."
